Be Green With the Samsung Blue Earth
Nothing is too small to make a contribution to saving the planet. Korean Mobile Phone Giant Samsung has been showing the way with its eco-friendly handsets that started last year. And in the mobile community, makers have to make waves to get noticed. Samsung has done that again with the release of its latest eco-friendly smartphone – the Samsung Blue Earth. The Blue Earth got its first outing in the last Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and should be hitting the market this month.
Eco-Friendly Features
Samsung claims its Blue Earth handset to be made from PCM bio-plastics or Post Consumer Material, i.e., recycled plastic from old water bottles and striped of harmful substances such as Phthalate, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants). Then its packaging box is made from recycled pulp and the printing made use of Soya-based ink (now that’s something new). Its production process is also eco-friendly using less electric consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emission. Once the handset reaches the market, it comes with a battery charger that’s also green, consuming 0.03 watts of power when on standby. It even gets 5-star energy efficiency rating for the EC Integrated Product Commission to which Samsung is a co-signatory to its Integrated Product Policy specifying the star energy compliance requirements. What stands out from the handset is the fact that it’s also solar rechargeable. Its back cover is mostly covered with solar panels that charge the battery as it gets exposed to direct sunlight. You can benefit 4 hours of talk time from 10-14 ours of solar charging (though we all know there’s only 12 hours of sunlight in most countries and the noonday sun is enough to fry your mobile phone.)
That should forever banish low bat warnings just when you’re in the middle of a call. Just get out into the open and let the sun do the charging. This is obviously won’t make sense during the winter months in the north and south hemisphere when they don’t get sunlight for 6 months on end.
High End Features for a High End Price
Eco-friendly on the side, let’s see how its phone features stack up. It won’t win customers just be being green. But looking at its data sheet, the Samsung Blue Earth can pass as a high end mobile phone alright.· The Blue Earth is first and foremost a quad band GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 on the 2G network and a dual band UMTS 900/2100 on 3G Network. With HSDPA/HSUPA, you can expect to have high speed internet downloading and browsing. WiFi 802.11 b/g is supported as well as Bluetooth 21.1 with EDT for wireless data connectivity.
